Tile + Toilet = Tilelet?

Fes, Morocco

A Fun Fact: "Tilelet" is also, interestingly enough, pretty close to how my SOUTHERN FATHER pronounces the word "toilet" in his deep Texas accent.

The thing that most fascinates me about traveling is witnessing how different cultures of people -- when faced with the exact same problems that we have here in America -- solve them in such vastly different and uniquely interesting ways. Depending on what raw materials they had access to (and often, honestly, how much slave labor they had at their disposal throughout history), you get wildly different results. A solution may vary from the outset, on a conceptual level. Then add in that culture's distinctive ornamentation and conception of what qualifies as beautiful, and the result can be all but unrecognizable from what you are accustomed to. I will admit, I do find this is often more enjoyable when talking about something like a temple or a doorway, than if we are talking about a restroom or a toilet. Creativity and exoticism are not something I look for, or find appealing, IN A COMMODE.

So this bathroom is a winner on all levels for me, it has a familiar, uncreative, western-style toilet, but is surrounded by all the beauty and excitement of Morocco’s famous zellige tiles. Awesome!

And even though the room did make me a little dizzy, there was a nice place to sit down, which, c’mon. At the end of the day, isn’t that all that really matters?
