Me, Maria, and the Great Sphink-Us

Giza Necropolis, Egypt

All over Egypt, they had difficulty pronouncing our English word for their ancient monument, so instead of saying the word "Sphinx," they said an upsetting bastardization of it that sounded both dirty and vaguely medical.

Imagine that you are going to say the word sphincter, but at the last second, you take a surprise left turn and replace the "ter" with "us."

The Sphinkus. The Great Sphinkus of Giza.

We heard this so often that it is emblazoned on my brain, and Sphincus is how I will think of this monument forevermore.
